UGC Video: Formats, Uses and Examples

In one sentence: a UGC video is a short, authentic video, shot as if by a real customer, that presents your product in a credible way. Here is what it is for, the formats that exist, and how it is built, without jargon.

What a UGC video is

Let me set the basics. UGC stands for User Generated Content, content created by a real person rather than by an advertising studio. UGC video relies on authenticity, that little grain of truth that makes you stop scrolling. You see a person, a real everyday setting, a product that looks genuinely tested.

The nuance with a classic ad comes down to all of that, the tone, the frame, the intent. The ad asserts, the UGC video tells a story and reassures. And if you want to understand who is behind these videos, I detailed the craft on my page UGC creator.

What a UGC video is for

Three uses come back all the time, and they do not ask the same thing of the video.

In paid advertising

On Meta Ads or TikTok Ads, the UGC video serves as a creative. It looks like organic content, so it blends into the feed without breaking the experience. A strong hook from the start, a clear message, and the job is done.

In organic content

On the brand’s feed, stories or reels, the UGC video feeds social presence without giving the impression of permanent advertising. It is content that lives, that gets shared, that humanises.

As social proof

On a product page, a sales page or an email, a video testimonial reassures at the moment of deciding. Seeing a real person hold the product, talk about it, use it, lifts many hesitations.

The formats we shoot

Not all formats say the same thing. Here are the ones I produce most often:

  • The testimonial, or review, which builds trust.
  • The unboxing, that pleasure of opening and first impression.
  • The product demo, to show real use, gesture by gesture.
  • The how-to tutorial, which teaches something useful along the way.
  • The face cam, direct speech looking into the camera.
  • The before and after, when the result shows.
  • The vlog and the routine, to fit the product into a real day.

The choice of format depends on your goal, not on a trend. We always talk it through beforehand.

An example of a polished UGC clip, designed like a mini authentic ad: a hook, a message, a rhythm.

Why this format works

Industry studies put forward telling figures. You often read that people would trust a real person more than brand content, that UGC drives more engagement, and that a large majority of companies now build it into their strategy. I share these markers with all the caution they deserve, they are market trends, not a promise of results on your campaign.

What is certain, on the other hand, is that authenticity is felt. An honest video, well shot and well spoken, works for you for a long time.

The same spirit in a product demo format, where we show the material, the cut and the movement.

How a good UGC video is built

No mystery, mostly method. We start from a clear brief, the context, the angle, the messages to convey, the tone, and what to avoid. A clean brief avoids many back-and-forths. I then shoot, I edit, I deliver, and a revision allows for adjustments.

One point remains too often forgotten, usage rights. Depending on whether the video goes to advertising or organic, we set their scope and duration together, in black and white.

And a reel format, shorter and punchier, cut for fast scrolling.

Videos in several languages

A small advantage, I shoot in French, English and Italian, with a clear voice and no accent. So the same campaign can exist in several languages, with the same presence and the same tone. Handy for a brand that broadcasts beyond its borders.

And for one more language, we can dub the video using tools, not to replace me but to carry the message elsewhere. Depending on your needs, I deliver the raw footage or the edited video, ready to publish.

PS: the best UGC video is rarely the most perfect, it is the most fitting. Let us keep that in mind, you and I.
